Independent Safeguarding Authority

14th September 2009

Many of you will have seen and heard recent news reports regarding the Independent Safeguarding Authority and the vetting and barring scheme shortly to be introduced.  The current focus is on 'volunteers' who come into contact with children and vulnerable adults on a 'frequent' basis.  However, the scheme will continue to be broadened and expanded during 2010 and 2011.

On your behalf we have spoken to the Vetting and Barring Information Team info@vbs-info.org.uk .  They have informed us that any self-employed sports massage practitioner will be classed as 'carrying out health treatments' and any individual receiving massage will be classed as a 'vulnerable adult', whilst under the care of the practitioner.  Sports massage practitioners will, therefore, require ISA registration.

A new form will be made available early 2010 that will enable registration.

The registration process will commence in 2011 and once complete each practitioner will be issued a unique registration number and certificate.

We will keep you up to date with future developments.  For information visit www.isa-gov.co.uk
